چکیده

Microelectrode array of the Cochlear Implants (CI’s) is an important component of the device which performs a key function in restoring the hearing process to the deaf patients. CI’s are available with different variants in the market with different design of the Electrode array. Due to the importance of Electrode array in CI it’s also been researched looking for ways to microfabricate in different design, material, shape and size depending upon the requirement and the application of the device. The traditional fabrication method of the device restricts the electrode usability and its performance. In this paper we investigate and explore different design possibilities for CI electrode array. With the help of COMSOL Multiphysics ® 4.2a we also study the effect of electric field distribution caused due to stimulation of electrode array inside the fluidic environment of cochlea.

Electrical Stimulation of Spiral Ganglion Cells in the Human Cochlea: A 3D Model

Electrical stimulation of auditory nerve fibers by cochlear implant electrodes has been an approved clinical practice to restore the hearing sensation in profoundly deaf people. Profound deafness is largely attributed to the loss of hair cells and subsequent decay of peripheral processes of auditory nerve fibers in the cochlea. In such pathological condition, spiral ganglion cells (SGN) which a...

Numerical Study of Pure Electroconvection and Combined Electro-thermo-convection in Horizontal Channels

Electrohydrodynamic effect on natural convection in horizontal channels is investigated from a numerical point of view. The EHD effect is induced by narrow strip electrodes placed at the bottom wall of the channel. The channel is subjected in a first stage only to the electric forces, and in a second stage to the simultaneous action of a temperature gradient and an electric field. The interacti...

Spatial channel interactions in cochlear implants.

The modern multi-channel cochlear implant is widely considered to be the most successful neural prosthesis owing to its ability to restore partial hearing to post-lingually deafened adults and to allow essentially normal language development in pre-lingually deafened children. However, the implant performance varies greatly in individuals and is still limited in background noise, tonal language...

Abnormal Pitch Perception Produced by Cochlear Implant Stimulation

Contemporary cochlear implants with multiple electrode stimulation can produce good speech perception but poor music perception. Hindered by the lack of a gold standard to quantify electric pitch, relatively little is known about the nature and extent of the electric pitch abnormalities and their impact on cochlear implant performance. Here we overcame this obstacle by comparing acoustic and el...

Averaged electrode voltage testing to diagnose an unusual cochlear implant internal device failure.

This paper describes an unusual Clarion 1.2 cochlear implant failure in order to demonstrate the need for the clinical availability of electrode voltage testing. The case report describes a patient with a Clarion 1.2 cochlear implant who exhibited poor auditory progress in spite of grossly normal impedances and electric field testing, and an appropriate educational and psychosocial environment....
